How Much Water Should You Carry Backpacking?

A field-tested framework for planning water carries using distance, heat, elevation, source reliability, and treatment time instead of one-size-fits-all advice.

Water planning is one of the least glamorous parts of backpacking and one of the easiest places to make a bad plan. A route may have blue lines on a map, but that does not mean a source will be flowing when you arrive, easy to reach, or safe to drink.

The goal is not to carry the most water. It is to know where your next reliable source is, how much you need to reach it, and what you will do if it is dry.

Estimate your personal use first

Your water need depends on temperature, sun exposure, body size, pace, food, and altitude. It also includes water for cooking and an emergency margin. Start with your recent hiking experience instead of borrowing a number from someone with a different body and itinerary.

As a planning exercise, track how much you drink during a long day hike in similar weather. Add the water used for meals and a reserve for delays. Then compare that total with the distance between reliable sources.

Do not treat electrolytes as a replacement for water. They can help with taste and sodium replacement, but they do not remove the need to drink enough fluids.

Think in source-to-source segments

For each section of the route, record:

Question Why it matters
Where is the next source? Distance alone does not tell you how much to carry
Is it reliable for your month? Snowmelt and small creeks can disappear
Is the source on the route? A short map detour can become a long climb
How long will treatment take? Filtering a slow seep changes your schedule
What is the backup? One dry source should not end the trip

The longest dry segment determines your carry. A route with frequent dependable streams may require less water than a shorter desert route with one uncertain tank.

Maps show drainage, not a guarantee

Topographic maps, guidebooks, and recent reports are useful evidence, not a promise. A source can be seasonal, buried under snow, fenced off, contaminated by livestock, or located farther below the trail than it appears.

Treat a spring as uncertain when:

When the consequence of a dry source is serious, carry enough to reach the next source you trust. If that adds too much weight, change the itinerary rather than gambling on the map.

Treatment is part of the water plan

Carry a treatment method you can use in the conditions you expect. A filter may be fast at a clear stream and frustrating at a muddy pool. Chemical treatment can be dependable but requires contact time. A backup method is worthwhile on remote routes, especially when a broken filter would leave you without a workable option.

Keep untreated and treated water separate. Do not place a dirty bottle opening against a clean reservoir. Backflush or maintain your filter according to the manufacturer's instructions, and protect it from freezing if the model can be damaged by ice.

Giardia is not the only concern. Agricultural runoff, mining history, and local advisories can change what treatment is appropriate. Check the managing agency's current guidance for the route.

Heat and climbing increase the margin you need

Sun, wind, dry air, and sustained climbing can raise your water use quickly. So can a slow pace caused by a heavy pack or loose terrain. Start early in exposed country when practical, refill before a long climb, and do not wait until you feel thirsty to discover that a source is dry.

Water also has a carrying cost. One liter weighs about 2.2 pounds before the container. A large carry can change your pace and increase the water you need, creating a feedback loop. This is why a reliable source and a realistic itinerary matter more than a universal maximum.

Make a water card before you leave

Write the route's water plan on paper or save it offline:

  1. Mark every source and its confidence for your travel month.
  2. Circle the longest dry stretch.
  3. Note the minimum carry to complete that stretch.
  4. Add a backup source or exit option.
  5. Record where to check current conditions.

Share that plan with the person who has your itinerary. If a source is unexpectedly dry, you want someone else to understand why your schedule may change.
